There are many individuals that design websites for others. As a web designer, they have the unique task of developing ideas for a website. They must take that idea and translate it into unique and visual art. As a result, many individuals that make a living as a web designer are true artists.

Making a living as a web designer is a relatively new occupation. Generally speaking, web design did not exist 20 years ago. However, today an occupation as a web designer is turned into one of the more coveted and popular jobs in the fields of artistry and technology.

Types of Occupations

Individuals that perform web design either do it in unison with other members on the design team, or they act as a freelancer, continually seeking work and jobs. Regardless of how they choose to enter the employment field, there are two specific kinds of designers. The first are referred to as virtual designers. It is their duty to conceptualize the creative idea of how the website will appear, and then design it to function as a site. 

They often use the assistance of some specific type of art program, which could include Adobe Photoshop.

The second kind of designer is a programmer. It is the design programmer that can translate the design idea into Internet code or language, including HTML and others. This is required because every Internet browser including Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer does not have the capacity to read designs or images, but only HTML code. It is the code itself that will instruct every web browser to display the creative design.

In fairness, there is actually a third type of web designer. These individuals blend both the technical aspect of programming and the visual arts of creative design. These types of individuals that have the capacity to perform both duties are in high demand.

Their Function

The specific function of the web designer is to develop and create pages for websites and blogs that have the ability to relay information through a variety of media. Quite similar to an art director in a photo shoot or magazine, a web designer must have the ability to create a site design that can fully convey the sites intended content.

An individual that is successful in web design is the one that can create pages that are extremely usable yet visually stimulating. To do that requires skill. The design must allow the user to interact with the website or blogging page in a way that will not interfere with the content.

The Misconceptions

There is a serious misconception about making a living as a web designer, in that it is a job that nearly anyone could perform. While it may be true that with the right software anyone can create a basic design, it actually takes specific talent to be an effective and creative web designer.

With skillful training, and a high level of talent, web designers have the ability to design and create functional, clever sites from scratch.
